# Design a Product Habit Loop

This prompt turns a product that people use once into one they reach for on their own. It diagnoses stalled behavior against motivation, ability, and trigger, then designs the full four step loop (trigger, action, reward, investment) on top of the Fogg behavior model, so every pass through the loop stores value, loads the next trigger, and compounds the habit. The output is a concrete, mapped habit loop plus the mechanics and instrumentation to build it.

## When to use this

→ Users sign up, hit value once, then quietly stop coming back (a retention or habit problem, not an acquisition problem).
→ You are designing onboarding and want the first sessions to build a repeatable behavior, not just a one time wow moment.
→ You can describe your product and your best users but cannot yet name the emotion that should pull people back without a notification.

FIRST, CLARIFY
If any of these are missing or vague, ask up to five targeted questions before proceeding: the core value the user actually receives, the single most important repeated action, the natural usage frequency, the emotional state that precedes use, and where the biggest drop off sits. Do not invent facts to fill gaps. If the user cannot name the emotion that precedes use, help them find it by walking through when and why people reach for the product.

METHOD

1. Diagnose the blocker first. Any behavior needs Motivation, Ability, and a Trigger present at the same moment. When the target action is not happening, exactly one of the three is missing. Name which. Prefer raising Ability (removing friction) over raising Motivation, because simplicity is usually cheaper and more reliable than persuasion.

2. Name the internal trigger, and treat it as a hypothesis. Identify the specific emotion that should pull the user back on their own, most often a negative state such as boredom, loneliness, uncertainty, fatigue, or fear of missing out. Answer the diagnostic question directly: what itch does this product scratch? Then name the strongest alternative candidate emotion and state what a user would say or do right before opening the product that would distinguish the two, so the team can verify which is real instead of building on a guess. If you cannot name any candidate, the product will stay dependent on paid prompts forever.

3. Design external triggers for the pre habit window. Habits take weeks to months to form, so specify owned triggers (push, email) and where earned or paid triggers seed the early loop. Write each as: "Every time a user feels {internal emotion}, they take {action}. Until that internal trigger forms, we prompt them via {external trigger} at {exact moment or context}." Favor fully loaded triggers that both prompt the desire and provide the path to act.

4. Simplify the action. Reduce the core action to the simplest behavior done in anticipation of a reward. Audit it against Fogg's six ability levers and cut cost on each: time, money, physical effort, brain cycles, social deviance, and non routine. Count the steps to the value moment and remove steps rather than only easing them.

5. Design a variable reward tied to the trigger. The reward must be variable, because anticipation, not delivery, drives the return, and a predictable reward gets boring. Pick from rewards of the tribe (social recognition), rewards of the hunt (information or resources), and rewards of the self (mastery, completion, control). The reward must match the internal trigger: if the itch is loneliness, connect people; if it is boredom, entertain. Reject gamification that does not resolve the actual need.

6. Engineer the investment. Specify one small piece of work the user does that both stores value and loads the next trigger. Stored value should appreciate with use: content, personalization data, followers, or reputation. Prompt the investment immediately after the reward, when reciprocity is highest. State exactly how that investment produces the next external trigger that pulls the user back.

7. Set the loop cadence and secondary loops. The action should recur at least monthly; if natural frequency is lower, add touchpoints or a secondary loop that keeps you top of mind between core uses. Latch the new behavior onto an existing routine (habit stacking) rather than asking for a brand new time slot.

8. Instrument and ethics check. Define an activation metric that proves value received and correlates with retention, plus the drop off point to watch at each loop step. Confirm you are moving the user to a genuinely better place they will not regret, since any behavior change for your own ends is a form of influence to use responsibly.

OUTPUT FORMAT
→ One paragraph diagnosis naming the missing factor (Motivation, Ability, or Trigger).
→ A filled trigger template sentence (internal and external), plus the runner up internal trigger and the observable evidence that would distinguish the two.
→ The simplified action with the specific friction removed on each relevant ability lever.

→ Verify the reward is variable and connects to the named internal trigger, not generic points or badges.
→ Verify the investment loads a concrete next trigger, so the loop is circular rather than linear.
→ Verify the action was made easier, not just more motivating.
→ Verify every claim about user emotion or behavior that did not come from the provided context appears in the assumptions list, stated as a hypothesis rather than a fact.
→ Failure modes to avoid: naming a feeling you assumed instead of one the user described; a reward disconnected from the itch; an action with too many steps to first value; claiming a habit for a product needed less than monthly without a secondary loop; treating win back as a substitute for building the habit.

→ Make the variable reward resolve the exact internal trigger (tribe, hunt, or self). Anticipation, not delivery, drives the return. Reject points or badges that scratch no real need.
